Building a contribution culture in a Drupal agency

Session details

Open Source contribution is difficult to sustain in any organisation but gets especially difficult in an agency. The pressure of completing the projects and catering to last-minute changes does not give enough opportunity to contribute.

In this talk, you will learn how Axelerant enables contributions in all the projects on which we work. I'll talk about how we encourage everyone to contribute through awareness and incentives, and how to sustain those contributions. The ideas I present here help you make your team an extension of the community (which sounds obvious but rarely done in practice). I present workflows that help you build your application while also contributing to the community at the same time.

I'll also talk about how we track contributions, especially contributions made on drupal.org. I will showcase the tool we use to track the contributions and talk about how we built it.

Drupal apprentices

The best people to train new developers are developers

The Drupal Apprenticeship Scheme will be running a London intake in March. If you are interested in hiring an apprentice or know someone who would benefit from the scheme please get in touch via the link below.

  • Created and run by experienced developers
  • Teaches core skills and best practice
  • Extensive support for businesses and teams

We are also really keen to hear from people who might be interested in mentoring, training and helping us to develop and review training materials to make sure they stay absolutely current and relevant.
